Head of Unit, EU Climate and Energy Policy

WWF, the global conservation organisation, is looking to fill a full-time position, in its European Policy Office (WWF EPO) to work as a Head of unit, EU Climate and Energy Policy (re-announcement).

We seek an experienced, talented and motivated person to inspire the existing Brussels team of experts and lead WWF’s engagement with the European Union. This position has a high profile and would give the incumbent a major role in shaping climate and energy policy of WWF, the Brussels community and ultimately the policies of the European Union.

Main responsibilities:

  • Initiates, supervises and coordinates WWF EPO activities as they pertain to the European climate & energy agenda, in order to deliver on WWF’s European and international objectives;
  • Manages the EPO climate and energy team;
  • Provides strategic direction on EU issues to climate and energy staff in European offices and works in close cooperation with them;
  • Responsible for maintaining funding for a significant portion of team financing, and supporting office-wide fundraising activities;
  • Serves as the lead EPO spokesperson on climate and energy issues;
  • Provides technical expertise & guidance on European Climate and Energy issues to senior management and staff;
  • Works in close consultation with other programme department staff inside and outside EPO to identify policies and enabling conditions which need to be addressed to achieve WWF goals;
  • Interacts with the Global Climate and Energy initiative and other international WWF initiatives to provide EU expertise and representation;
  • Initiates, supervises and coordinates EPO-related campaigns and communications which will help to support the Network achieve its climate and energy goals;
  • Partners with European NGOs and other strategic allies to form common advocacy positions and alliances;
  • Keeps abreast of emerging issues concerning climate change and energy in Europe.

What you need:

Required Qualifications

  • 8 or more years of relevant professional experience in various aspects of energy and/or climate protection policy;
  • Experience of and deep knowledge about the ‘European political system’ and the EU-based institutions as well as the European energy and climate policy;
  • Proven experience as an effective spokesperson, lobbyist, strategist, and fundraiser;
  • Line management skills, competences and experience;
  • Experience working with governments, NGOs, and corporate sector.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Project management skills and experience;
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills; ability to mentor and develop multi-disciplinary, multicultural teams;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English, other languages an advantage;
