EU Affairs Manager

The Wellcome Trust is a global foundation dedicated to improving health. We are the largest charitable funder in Europe by spend. We provide around €900 million a year to support research in science and the humanities, as well as education, public engagement and the translation of research into health benefits. Our investment portfolio of €23 billion allows us to support transformative work such as the sequencing of the human genome and research to develop new treatments for malaria.
The Wellcome Trust’s advocacy work seeks to ensure that the policy and regulatory environment in Europe promotes research, and the uptake of research into health benefits, while maintaining public confidence. Our work on EU policy issues has increased over the last ten years and we are now seeking a dedicated EU Affairs Manager to maximise our impact and influence. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced individual to develop and lead the Trust’s engagement in Europe. This role will involve:
  • developing and delivering our EU engagement strategy, to provide more visibility and raise the Trust’s profile in Brussels
  • establishing stronger relationships with and building our networks in the EU institutions
  • working in partnership with a wider range of European stakeholders, including pan-European groups, foundations, patient groups and researchers
  • representing the Trust in Brussels, including regular travel
  • developing advocacy strategies on an issue-by-issue basis to maximise our influence across key priorities.
To be successful, you will need to have:
  • experience of working with the EU institutions and legislative procedures, and a strong understanding of the European political landscape
  • experience of building and managing stakeholder relationships, and developing advocacy strategies
  • excellent written and spoken English (knowledge of another European language is desirable)
  • strong influencing and negotiation skills
  • a highly collaborative approach, with strong interpersonal skills.
We offer competitive salaries plus excellent benefits.
