The African Union was established as a unique Pan African continental body. Its Headquarters is located at Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia. In seeking to achieve these objectives, the African Union intends to strengthen its human resource by filling in all its vacant posts. Thus the Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for the post of a PHYSICIAN at the Directorate of Medical Services.
Job Title: Physician (Internal Medicine Specialist).

Duty station: African Union Commission, Addis Ababa.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
The AU Medical Services is an outpatient polyclinic undergoing gradual transformation into a modern outpatient and inpatient facility. It provides preventive and curative services to the AU Staff, their eligible dependents, African Diplomats accredited to Ethiopia and the AU, AU Consultants and Delegates to AU meetings. It also administers the Medical Assistance Plan and Medical Insurance within the AU Commission and Regional Offices. A senior and highly skilled PHYSICIAN (A specialist in Internal Medicine) is targeted to fill this position.
Under the direct supervision of the Director, the Physician will be responsible for the following:
  • To provide daily general and specialized medical consultations, diagnosis and treatment to the African Union Commission staff members, staff members of the African and other approved Diplomatic corps based in Addis Ababa, their eligible dependents and Delegates to AU Meetings.
  • Provide emergency medical care and arrange their transfer to other health facilities.
  • Refer staff members and their dependents when necessary to appropriate medical specialists locally and follow up on their management.
  • To carry out ward rounds regularly on all admitted adult patients and provide high level input into their management.
  • To participate in the development and delivery of health promotion, disease prevention and occupational Health and safety programs of the Directorate (including HIV and AIDS in the workplace).
  • To actively participate in the AU Medical Board in determining the necessity for medical evacuations, prepare the clinical information and present same to the Medical Board for clearance. Play an active role in the management of the evacuation process, monitor the progress of the evacuees and facilitate their return.
  • To participate and provide expertise in medical coverage for AU Summits, AU Field Missions and outreach to AU Regional Offices.
  • Participate in continuing medical education programs for Medical staff.
  • Evaluate employee performance, and recommend disciplinary action. May instruct interns and other medical personnel on matters pertaining to Clinical Services.
  • To participate fully in the development of budget proposal, its implementation, monitoring and evaluation for the Unit.
  • To represent the Head of Division Clinical Services at various meetings when the need arise
  • To perform any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Educational Qualifications and Work Experience Required
  • Must have MD or MBBS degree, with residency in Internal Medicine.
  • A documented qualification in endocrinology and metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, rheumatology, or gastroenterology will be an added advantage;
  • any other clinical field related to internal medicine will be considered.
  • At least eight (8) years of experience in clinical practice within a government National hospital, private practice, university teaching hospital or international organization as unit, team, section, or department head has an added advantage.
Other Relevant Skills
  • Must be computer literate;
  • Hands on experience/ exposure to telemedicine, ultrasound, and modern imaging techniques;
  • Ability to communicate scientific information as evidenced by scientific / other publications;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to organize and motivate others, and work in a multicultural environment;
  • Must have good communication skills with patients, colleagues and the clients;
  • Excellent drafting and reporting skills.
Language Requirement
  • Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages.
  • Knowledge of one or several other working languages would be an added advantage.
Tenure of Appointment
The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.

Remuneration
Indicative basic salary of US$ 40,413.00 per annum plus other related entitlements e.g.
Post adjustment
(46% of basic salary), Housing allowance US$ 14,414.40 per annum ), education allowance (75% of tuition and other education related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum), etc for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
