Technical Officer, based in Beijing, China
The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (www.theunion.org) is an international nongovernmental organisation established in 1920. It is most widely known for the research that led to the global strategy for treating and controlling tuberculosis. The mission of The Union is to bring innovation, expertise, solutions and support to address health challenges in low- and middle-income populations; and its vision is health solutions for the poor. With nearly 15,000 members and subscribers from 152 countries, The Union has its headquarters in Paris and offices serving the Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, North America and South-East Asia regions. Its scientific departments focus on TB and HIV, lung health and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), tobacco control and research.
Position
The position is for 12 months renewable depending on funding and satisfactory performance.
Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development of The Union China’s strategy and work plan for tobacco control and its implementation;
  • Contribute to the research programme of the office through generating research ideas and carrying out research projects either independently or jointly with other organisations;
  • Support the planning and promotion of the training and capacity building programme of the office;
  • Support the development of best-practice technical resources and materials;
  • Develop policy-relevant profiles and status reports and maintain up to date information related to tobacco control in China;
  • Provide advanced technical support to the Director of China Office including supplying data, reports, analyses, and other information as requested;
  • Gather and share intelligence on developments relevant to tobacco control through strategic liaison with selected stakeholders;
  • Contribute to monitoring of grants and provide expert technical assistance for effective program planning, implementation and evaluation;
  • Other duties as assigned;
  • This position will be based in Beijing;
  • Competent compensation commensurate with education and experience will be provided.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in public health or medicine or related field, Doctoral degree preferred;
  • Minimum of three years of work/research experience, preferably in a health-related setting;
  • Prior work/research experience in tobacco control and/or prior publication record is a plus;
  • Strong proficiency in both spoken and written Chinese and English;
  • Up to 20% of domestic and international travel will be required.
