The European Tugowners Association (ETA) is a non-profit seeking organisation based in Brussels – Belgium that represents at EU and maritime industry institutional levels the interest of over 80 full time members owning and/or operating some 700 tugboats in over 20 European ports and employing over 8,000 people. Its core objectives are to advance and promote the interests of its members in relation to European legislation and policy in all relevant matters, develop a coherent strategy for the towage industry and maintain an effective internal and external communication flow between its members and pertinent stakeholders
Applications are invited from individuals for the post of Secretary General.

Main duties of Secretary General

The role and responsibilities of the Secretary General is principally to implement the strategic and operational decisions made by the General Meeting or the Supervisory Committee. In this regard the Secretary General will work closely with the Chairman and the Deputy-Chairman of ETA, as well as other ETA officers, the Supervisory Committee members and the general membership.
The Secretary General will inter-alia be responsible for the day-to-day running of ETA’s secretariat providing administrative support to the organization, act as a point of contact for general enquiries, attend to any statutory duties in accordance with Belgian legislative requirements, disseminate relevant information among ETA’s members, participate and network in meetings held in relevant forums to advocate ETA’s agenda and more importantly lobby the interests of the Association with the European Institutions. Competencies and Experience required

The post holder will be self-motivated, able to work independently, plan own time and discharge duties effectively to meet deadlines and respond to different multiple tasks and priorities.
The post holder will be able to communicate clearly and fluently in English at a professional level both orally and in writing, though knowledge of other European languages will be an asset. Must have reasonable experience in the wider shipping industry and relevant EU institutions, possess strong diplomatic and interpersonal networking skills to enable the candidate to communicate effectively with the directors and senior management of a diverse range of Association Members (embracing several national realities and ways of working) that include family-owned businesses and large international companies, including also with senior people from the European Commission, industry, technical bodies and government. The candidate should also have strong lobby skills and a clear understanding of the structures and workings of the EU institutions, however with a neutral and open-minded view.
The position of Secretary General commands the academic requirement of masters or bachelor degree in law, maritime, business administration or economics. Reasonable experience in a senior position related to the wider shipping industry or shipping organizations will be considered an asset.
