Deputy Chief Economist at Australian Government Department of Communications

Bureau of Communications Research
Deputy Chief Economist
Make a Difference to Australia’s Communications Future
The Department of Communications promotes an innovative and competitive communications sector so Australians can realise the full potential of digital technologies and communications services.
The Department is the Government’s pre-eminent advisor on communications, in particular digital technologies and communications services. Strategic priorities for the Department include: enhancing digital productivity; expanding digital infrastructure; promoting efficient communications markets; and strengthening its organisational capabilities. The Department advises the Government on six Communications Portfolio agencies: the ABC; SBS; NBN Co; Australia Post; ACMA; and the Digital Transformation Office.
The Department has recently established a Bureau of Communications Research (BCR) led by an experienced Chief Economist, and is now filling a new Deputy Chief Economist role.  The BCR has an ambitious research and publication agenda, and is rolling out a new fully-supported big data analytics capability to all departmental staff.
As Deputy Chief Economist, you will be required to design, lead and report on research on international and domestic developments in digital technologies, networks and communications services and how their use and adoption across the economy could enhance productivity, improve competition and encourage innovation. You will also support the Chief Economist in setting the BCR’s research agenda, engaging with industry, academic and government stakeholders, and publicising the BCR’s research finding.
This is a unique opportunity in a department which is leading on agendas vital to Australia’s future.
To be a strong contender for this role you will have experience in the application of economic analysis within the fields of technology, innovation or competition to underpin evidence based policy and advice.  You will be forward thinking, self-motivated and adept at building relationships in a complex and fast paced environment.
