Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

EMBL is seeking a Project Manager with a strong scientific background to join the dynamic and international team of Euro-BioImaging in Heidelberg. As part of the EC-funded project CORBEL, the Project Manager will coordinate and support the Work Package WP4 “Community-driven cross-infrastructure joint research - Biosciences”. The CORBEL project aims to establish the operational framework of shared open access services for European scientists between the different European ESFRI Biological and Medical Research Infrastructures (BMS RI), including Euro-BioImaging.

Since 2008, Euro-BioImaging is the research infrastructure project for imaging technologies on the ESFRI roadmap [1]. Euro-BioImaging will provide open physical user access to state-of-the-art imaging technologies for life scientists in Europe and beyond. It will offer image data support and imaging technology training for infrastructure users. For more information, please visit www.eurobioimaging.eu.

CORBEL will start in September 2015 and comprise 35 partners spread over 11 BMS RIs with a total budget of € 14.8 M. The goal of WP4 is to allow research projects in the biological sciences to use services of several RIs. WP4 is jointly coordinated by Euro-BioImaging and ISBE, and will establish common services, sample handling and data acquisition and annotation pipelines that allow users to bridge from the nano to the micro scale. Through four distinct use cases - from novel model organisms to genotype-phenotype predictions - WP4 will shape the joint services in close partnership with pioneer users to establish the framework for transnational open user access across infrastructures.

The Euro-BioImaging WP4 Project Manager will have the responsibility for work package management including communication with all other participating infrastructures and users, monitoring of deliverables and EC reporting. The Project Manager will work in close collaboration with the Euro-BioImaging team, under supervision of the EMBL Head of Imaging Infrastructure Strategy Development.

The responsibilities are as follows:
  • Strategic and day-to-day management of WP4 operation in close collaboration with all involved infrastructure partners;
  • Support the service sites of the BMS infrastructures to establish the technical framework for their common portfolio of shared services;
  • Dissemination of the portfolio of shared services to the scientific community and engagement with users;
  • Preparing, administering and evaluating user access to the shared services;
  • Close collaboration with all other CORBEL work packages;
  • Effective and proactive communication on processes and operational outcomes to WP4 partners and the CORBEL project management;
  • Close collaboration with the Euro-BioImaging team to realize synergies between WP4 CORBEL and Euro-BioImaging operations and future strategy.

Qualifications and Experience

Experience in scientific project management in a competitive research environment is required with proven ability to effectively interact with multiple stakeholders on international and interdisciplinary level. A PhD in life sciences with experience relevant to Euro-BioImaging and experience of working in a high-paced professional, academic environment is expected. The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter with a proven ability to manage project implementation and deliver independently within a multi-disciplinary team environment. Effective multi-tasking and the ability to work with tight deadlines are a must. The candidate needs to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to move between the scientific and managerial level. Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory, German would be a plus.
