The role

We are currently seeking a talented Mangrove and Coastal Zone Adviser to be nominated and to work closely with other specialists to our TONGA Climate Resilience Sector Project proposal.
The Mangrove and Coastal Zone Adviser will support the PIU in implementing the Mangrove Assessment and Rehabilitation Output under CRSP. The Mangrove and Coastal Zone Adviser will contribute to the development of a full work plan for the sub-project and contribute to the more detailed scoping out of all project activities with the PIU. In addition, he/she will guide the development of a monitoring and evaluation framework for this component. The Mangrove and Coastal Zone Adviser will work closely with the national Project Manager Senior Technical Adviser and Mangrove Field Specialist. Specifically the candidate will:
(i) guide the coordination of the National Mangrove Inventory and develop indicators for climate change resilience related elements to be developed as part of the process.
(ii) guide the process of integration and standardization of the various regional wetland inventories;
(iii) produce an evaluation of the changes in the mangroves of Tonga over the last 40 years;
(iv) identify priority sites for future investments in mangrove restoration in Tonga;
(v) lead 2 case studies of evaluation of the effectiveness of past planting activities and guide the local team in the delivery of this package;
(vi) guide the development of a report on the evaluation of past mangrove planting initiatives outlining lessons learned;
(vii) support the team to establish "best practice" guidelines for mangrove planting, monitoring and evaluation; and
(viii) provide advice and guidance on the most suitable approaches for mangrove grow-out.

The Mangrove and Coastal Zone Adviser will hold a Master's degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized university and will possess at least 10 years of experience in the management of mangrove ecosystems, in particular in relation to climate change adaptation. Practical experience working in the Pacific on CCA and/or DRM related initiatives and preferably in Tonga will be considered an asset.
