Human Rights Officer

Mental Health Europe (MHE) is looking for a full-time Human Rights Officer for its secretariat in Brussels.
Purpose of the job To support Mental Health Europe’s advocacy and policy campaigning work in the field of human rights of persons with psychosocial disabilities/mental ill-health
Responsibilities include mainly:
1. To support MHE’s work on the implementation by the EU of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in respect to persons with psychosocial disabilities;
2. To support the organisation of MHE events and capacity-building seminars in relation to Human Rights and EU policies of relevance for persons with psychosocial disabilities/mental health problems;
3. To alert Mental Health Europe as well as the membership about threats and opportunities at the EU level regarding human rights in the field of mental health;
4. To provide strategic support and expertise in the field of fundamental rights of persons with psychosocial disabilities/mental health problems;
5. To provide advocacy materials, position papers, briefings and background documents on Human Rights policies and strategies;
6. To co-ordinate and implement the work of the MHE Committee on Mental Health and Human Rights;
7. To liaise with relevant institutions and human rights bodies.
8. Participating in meetings as well as representing MHE at meetings and events across Europe; preparing reports as well as newsletters articles from these meetings.
Requirements for the position
Essential:
  • Good knowledge of the mental health field or proven interest or experience in the sector
  • Good knowledge of the EU institutions along with proven experience of monitoring policy work
  • Understanding of and commitment to the social model of disability
  • Fluency in English (written, spoken)
  • Good communication, cooperation and organizational skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and to take initiatives
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a small, busy, international team
  • Willingness to travel and to work in weekends when necessary
  • Computer literacy
Desirable:
  • Knowledge of other European languages (preferably French or German)
  • Experience from working within an NGO at the EU level
