Economist or Senior Economist, Competition

The Commerce Commission’s purpose is to achieve the best possible outcomes in competitive and regulated markets for the long-term benefit of New Zealanders.
The Competition Economics team provides economic advice and strategic input into the Commissions competition and consumer work.
This is an excellent opportunity for you to join our team of talented, qualified economists who play a key role in investigating and analysing merger, unilateral conduct, and cartel investigations. To a lesser extent, we also assist in consumer investigations, mainly in helping to assess the nature and extent of harm.
You will undertake complex research, and evaluate the views of the parties concerned. Working within a multi-disciplinary project team, you will help ensure the quality of the economic analysis underpinning our investigations.
To be successful, you will have experience with complex economic research and analysis, both qualitative and quantitative. You will enjoy the challenge of using your economic analysis skills in the New Zealand competition environment.
Your knowledge and experience will include:
  • A post graduate qualification in economics, specialising in competition economics, industrial organisation or another area of microeconomics
  • Demonstrated experience managing or participating in projects
  • Demonstrated success in presenting information to a non-economist audience.
