Chief Scientist for Australia

Advancing science for an innovative, prosperous and sustainable Australia
The Chief Scientist is a specialist, full-time independent advisory position that shapes and influences public policy in Australia. 
The role operates across Government, and is supported by the Office of the Chief Scientist in the Department of Industry and Science. The Chief Scientist is an ex-officio member and executive officer of the Prime Minister’s Commonwealth Science Council, and of other key government forums.
Key priorities are to drive improvements in Australia’s performance in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, research and innovation, particularly in areas of national priority, including by fostering collaboration with key stakeholders such as scientific and research institutions, industry, State and Territory governments, as well as with international partners. 
Additionally, the role supports Government action to strengthen Australia's scientific profile internationally.
The successful applicant will have a substantial scientific track record and standing, be a passionate and effective communicator across disciplines and sectoral boundaries, and have significant policy advisory experience. The ability to drive the Government’s focus on placing science at the centre of industry policy is particularly important.

The period of appointment is negotiable up to five years.
