Senior Communications Manager

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Communications Manager is an integral member of CLM, responsible for bringing critical leadership and governance content issues to the forefront of MSH, as well as domestic and international professional, government, and donor audiences. The Senior Communications Manager sits within one portfolio of projects within CLM, the Franco-Karibu portfolio, which consists of a dozen projects in East Africa, Haiti, and West Africa. S/he guides project teams in developing high impact dissemination and communications plans, and builds communications capacity in project support teams and field projects. S/he collaborates with CLM staff and other centers’ communications teams and the Office of Global Partnerships, Marketing and Communications (PMC). An excellent writer and communications professional, the Senior Communications Manager provides content to the MSH Corporate Office of PMC and provides content and builds communications capacity in project support teams and field projects. S/he is responsible for orchestration of day-to-day communications efforts within the Franco-Karibu portfolio, including evaluation and quality assurance for promotional and written materials, advising on how to maximize impact on projects’ presence at conferences and meetings, and assuring access to general editorial and written support to the field projects. The Senior Communications Manager has overall responsibility for building the Franco-Karibu portfolio’s internal communications capacity by setting internal and external communication standards, guidelines, and processes. S/he collaborates with project support leadership and monitoring and evaluation specialists to provide guidance for and evaluation of document development and dissemination that analyzes project methodologies and results.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
****Communications Support to Field Projects****
  • Provide appropriate levels of guidance and support (as defined by needs and resources) to project support teams in development of analytical documents presenting project results and methodologies, and respond to other strategic and tactical requests from other field projects. This includes, but is not limited to: developing strategic communications programs and/or work plans, writing and editing technical documents, success stories, abstracts, fact sheets, promotional pieces, and other printed materials, and providing guidance on USAID branding and marking.
  • Manage Web-based content, both on MSH web site and Intranet for Franco-Karibu projects, collaborating with the MSH Senior Web Manager based in PMC.
  • Update and adapt standards, policies, tools, etc., for field communications.
  • Travel to the field to develop local communications capacity and document activities.
****Communications Support to CLM****
  • The Senior Communications Manager will contribute (both through direct contributions and managing the inputs of other staff) to the development of MSH communication products for both internal and external audiences, such as e-newsletters, fact sheets, success stories, web content, blogs, videos, and the MSH Annual Report. Responsibilities include researching, drafting text, copyediting, and coordinating interviews with key personnel.
  • Work with MSH’s global technical leads on governance, leadership and management, and human resources for health to ensure that MSH’s key messages regarding our technical expertise are disseminated through appropriate channels. Support global technical leads with content development or speaking opportunities as necessary.
  • Conference administration: Coordinate and manage CLM’s participation in major conferences, working closely with PMC’s corporate conference coordinator.
  • Participate in monthly MSH Communications Group meetings facilitated by PMC.
  • Collaborate upon request with PMC to create and implement training modules for use in communications capacity building. Provide training as necessary.
  • Support CLM’s Director of New Business Development with proposal writing, editing, and formatting upon request.

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Master’s Degree in journalism, communications, public health, or other related discipline and at least eight years of relevant experience.
  2. Fluency in spoken and written French.
  3. Self-starter who is able to work independently.
  4. Exceptional writing and verbal communications skills.
  5. Organized with good multi-tasking capabilities.
  6. Excellent inter-personal skills.
  7. Prior experience working with health and development programs, and USAID helpful.
  8. Computer skills essential; proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required. Experience with MS Access a plus. Microsoft Office applications preferred.
  9. Photography and video skills a plus.
