Policy Research Intern

ONE is a campaign and advocacy organisation backed by almost 6 million people from around the world who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. We hold world leaders to account for promises they make, and we press them to support better policies and more effective aid, delivered in a transparent and accountable way. We also work with leaders in Africa to support greater democracy, accountability and transparency so these resources can be effectively deployed. ONE has offices in Berlin, Brussels, Johannesburg, London, New York, Paris and Washington, DC.
The Policy & Research intern will support our London team with the development and delivery of research and policy work. This is an exciting opportunity for a bright, enthusiastic and dedicated team player with a keen and demonstrable interest in international development, Africa and the elimination of global poverty.
This is a five-month paid 35-hours per week internship beginning in September 2014. The position reports to the Research and Publication team’s Research Assistant and will also work closely with the UK Policy & Advocacy Manager.
Minimum Qualifications (Candidates should demonstrate the extent to which they meet these criteria in the covering letter):
  •  Bachelor’s degree level development studies, economics, or international affairs
  •  Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, in particular Outlook and Excel
  •  Effective communicator and strong English writing skills
  •  Excellent research and analytical skills, including quantitative data analysis
  •  Strong attention to detail and conscientious about delivering high-quality work
  •  Reliable and resourceful – able to think critically and get on with tasks independently
  •  Willing to learn quickly, and to speak up when in need of help or advice
  •  Highly organised; ability to work in a dynamic environment with shifting priorities, to multi-task and deliver on research requests quickly
  •  Confident, articulate and able to represent ONE at external events and meetings, including with UK officials, parliamentarians and peer NGOs
  •  Strong sense of teamwork and collaboration
  •  Proven interest in development and Africa, and commitment to ONE’s mission
  •  Understanding of the UK and global development policy context preferred
Some Principal Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  •  Undertaking research and data analysis on our key policy issues, including development finance, transparency (including the ‘data revolution’), global health, and the post-2015 development agenda
  •  Contributing to internal briefings and fact-finding on a range of topics
  •  Assisting with the research, writing and dissemination of policy publications
  •  Updating and fact-checking ONE content, e.g. website, issue briefs, and advocacy materials
  •  Communicating policy topics to a broad audience by writing posts for the ONE blog
  •  Attending relevant policy workshops and events, and summarising information for the wider team as relevant
  •  Supporting the UK advocacy team, including preparation for the political party conferences, attending and providing feedback from NGO coalition meetings, and contributing to ONE’s political strategy
  •  Working with the wider UK team and providing general administration and events support as required
