Knowledge Management Specialist

Overview
This 12-month temporary appointment has been established to provide support to the Communication & Marketing Section within the Private Fundraising and Partnerships Division (PFP) in improving the flow and quality of information in order to make it actionable; increasing learning and replication of successful activities by filtering, documenting and disseminating examples of good practice and lessons learned; and tracking and measuring the impact of information and knowledge use.
Responsibilities
Working closely with the Chief, Communication and Marketing, the Senior Management and Wider Management Teams as well as with the PFP Sections and Units and the Knowledge Exchange Team at NYHQ, the incumbent will support the establishment of clear accountabilities and strong culture for knowledge sharing within PFP to improve knowledge capture and exchange in the private sector network. The incumbent will have the following responsibilities:
  1. Identify business critical knowledge that needs to be made available to their stakeholders (e.g. National Committees and country offices); determine best ways to capture and disseminate, and define KPIs for effective reach and user satisfaction.
  2. Identify, test and measure success new/innovative ways of knowledge sharing and document learnings for others to consider for replication (if successful). This includes assessing learning and applying knowledge capture and sharing approaches used elsewhere in UNICEF, and coordination with the broader UNICEF knowledge management (KM) initiatives.
  3. Foster a more pronounced culture of knowledge exchange within the private sector network using thematic and specialist meetings and workshops to systematically share and record National Committee and country office examples and good practices.
  4. Support the Internal Communication Team in its role to act as secretariat for and provide guidance to the network of KM Managers on tools and mechanisms to be used and facilitate communicating successful KM initiative.
  5. Manage the bi-annual PFP Knowledge Management and Internal Communication Assessment.
  6. Support the establishment of an improved infrastructure for knowledge sharing established to facilitate collaboration, document and information management and promote KM activities.
Reporting
The incumbent will work under the overall guidance of the PFP Chief of Communication & Marketing and the direct supervision of the Internal Communication Manager. The incumbent will provide support and advice to the supervisor and is expected to advise the supervisor of problem areas and issues.
In carrying out the above tasks, the incumbent will be working closely with the Knowledge Management Focal Points throughout the Division, the Internal Communication and Knowledge Management Working Group, the PFP Intranet Editorial Board and other relevant stakeholders to present findings and seek feedback. The incumbent will also prepare periodic progress updates for presentation to the Senior Management Team.
Qualifications and Experience of Successful Candidate
Minimum eight years of progressively responsible professional work experience in knowledge management or internal communication, some of which at the international level.
  • Masters degree in knowledge or information management, internal communication or related technical field;
  • Prior experience with knowledge management, network support and information sharing;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English, fluency in other UN languages an asset;
  • Ability to work independently and to meet tight deadlines;
  • Strong analytical and conceptual thinking;
  • Experience of working within UNICEF or other UN entities, familiarity with the work of UNICEF National Committees and/or private sector fundraising would be an asset.
