Scientist - Weed Scientist (Southeast Asia)

Job Purpose
The Weed Scientist will lead and develop a research and development program on innovative crop and natural resource management approaches to manage weeds in rice production systems as these intensify and diversify in Southeast Asia. The research will contribute to Theme 3 of the Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP): “Ecological and sustainable management of rice-based production systems.” He/she will collaborate closely with teams of agronomists, plant breeders and others working on integrated solutions for future rice-based cropping systems. In collaboration with partners, he/she will conduct research on ecological approaches and management solutions for weed control, with a particular focus on integrated approaches. He/she will develop principles and decision tools for knowledge dissemination to researchers and professional extension staff.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead the research on weed management for rice in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on developing strategies based on an understanding of the role of different management options
  • Determine practical management options and practices that reduce population of weeds over successive seasons
  • Develop improved weed management strategies for wet and dry, direct seeded rice that may comprise soil tillage, fallow management, and cultural and chemical weed control measures;
  • Research emphasis should be the systematic development of principles toward converting them into new decision tools for technology dissemination (GRiSP Product Line 3.1 & 3.3)
  • Guide and conduct research together with NARES colleagues working in that field.
  • Contribute to the creating extension materials for weed management options based on research findings.
  • Develop new projects together with IRRI colleagues, ARIs, and NARES in Southeast Asia
  • Represent IRRI’s crop and natural resource management research to a wide audience by presenting at international conferences/meetings, having papers published in international journals, and communicating with various stakeholders and decision makers
  • Lead a research team at IRRI headquarters and fulfill various professional services for the Institute.

Qualifications

  • PhD in weed science, agronomy or relevant field
  • At least 5 years’ postgraduate research experience; strong publication record; strong background in field-oriented research and extension activities; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
