Located in the Kitimat region of British Columbia, the Kitimat, Kemano and Watershed operations are part of Rio Tinto Alcan Primary Metal North America. Over the next four years, the Kitimat Smelter will convert from 1950s reduction technology to the most advanced version of AP40 technology. This new smelter will have a maximum aluminum production capacity of 420 000 tonnes per year, primarily supplying the Asian markets.
The opportunity 
Due to a number of new and exciting opportunities, we are seeking suitably qualified and highly motivated individuals to fill the position of Operation Supervisor in Kitimat (place of residence) to direct supervise and provide assistance of the plant operations activities. Manage and supervise staff ensuring work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures and performs other complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

What the role entails
  • Reporting to the Casting Manager you will be responsible for:
  • Supervise assist and evaluate operational staff as well as the daily activities (including staff placement, work orders, maintenance and various operational issues) in accordance with company goals, standards, costs, budgets, manpower and established procedures.
  • Providing direction and guidance of plant personnel/ operators and their activities according to the assigned area/shift. Plan and organize the daily work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Reviews departmental and individual employee performance, and prepares related assessment reports, maintains activities logs, monitors productivity, and prepares reports for management, which may suggest procedural or personnel changes.
  • Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities, identifying, developing and implementing best practices in safety and quality.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures; provide recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports; may include equipment budget projections, preparation of proposals for expenditures, and monthly or weekly reports of progress, risk evaluation; etc. Using problem solving skills and root cause analysis to resolve and/or mitigate operational issues.
What you will need for this role
  • Technical Degree/High School Diploma with substantial related proven leadership and supervisory experience in an industrial, mining and/or military sector.
  • University degree in Engineering with leadership and supervisory experience will be highly considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of managing safety and/or quality practices and procedures. Basic accounting principles and practices.
  • The ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing requests while maintaining a culture of accountability and execution. This position also requires critical thinking skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Acceptable working knowledge of PC’s and the use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Adaptable to a changing work environment and open to learning new procedures, equipment and systems.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Willingness to reside in Kitimat.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Supervisors must work constructively and collaborate with other areas.
