INTERNSHIP - DKH Regional Office West and Central Asia, Istanbul

BACKGROUND
Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (DKH) Regional Office (RO) West and Central Asia is located in Istanbul, Turkey. DKH aims to increase and further strengthen relations with its implementing partners in focus countries, by providing program support. DKH partners are working on humanitarian assistance and Disaster Risk Reduction. For the year 2014, the focus countries are Northern Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey (Syria related); and Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Palestine (DRR related). The Regional Office is also responsible for intervening in case of acute emergencies in South and Southeast Asia.
In 2014, DKH initiated the Capacity Building Initiative Asia (CBIA) as a systematic and continuous training program for DKH strategic partners in the region of West and Central Asia. The initiative will provide tailor-made support to DKH implementing partners in the focus countries. The program will run throughout 2014 and 2015 with possible extension.
In order to help carry out its daily project work, DKH works with interns.
TERMS OF REFERENCE
Working in close collaboration with the DKH RO Program Officers and under the supervision of the Regional Office Coordinator, the intern will take an active role in the following tasks:
Desk Research
  • Through desk research, analysis of the context in the focus countries, including the political, economic, social and humanitarian situation in the country, and drafting reports
  • Becoming familiar with the humanitarian and development strategies of major donors, particularly EU, for the focus countries and the region
  • Reading specialized reports on topics of concern for DKH and preparing a brief summary for the RO team
  • Identifying donor organisations/institutions providing funds in the region
  • Identifying opportunities for funds and calls for proposals that are relevant to DKH activities
Support to DKH RO Capacity Buidling Program 2014/15
  • Providing logistical support to the implementation of various training events in the region including:
identification, booking, preparation of training venues;
invitation of participants and support to participants necessary travel to training location;
travel to training venues (in focus countries) and provide administrative and logistical support during trainings to the trainer and participants.
  • Drafting and follow up of Capacity Building measures evaluations
Support to Project Management
  • Drafting of reports
  • Helping with the administrative and other preparatory work for the planning and implementation of project activities
  • Conducting daily communication with project stakeholders, as assigned
  • Support with project documentation
  • Supporting coordination efforts with related stakeholders and the organization of events such as conferences, trainings and workshops
  • Attending relevant meetings and preparing minutes
  • Drafting entries in English for DKH blog
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • University degree in a relevant field
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of humanitarian context and keen interest in relief and development work
  • Keen interest in capacity building programs
  • Proficiency in research, analytical skills with ability in gathering information from various sources and compiling documents
  • Analyzing data, producing statistics and reporting
  • Being well organized, able to prioritize and to keep track of variety of short term and long term tasks and juggle with deadlines
  • Good attention to detail
  • Creativity, interest in developing new tools to improve a program
  • Computer skills, good command of Excel and Word
  • Good knowledge of the English language, spoken and written
  • Strong commitment to teamwork
CONDITIONS
Location: Istanbul with possible travels to the focus countries
Duration: 6 months – full time
Start date: 15 August – ASAP
Financial compensation: DKH will cover all costs related to visa, residence permit and health insurance in Turkey for the duration of the internship, as well as lunch on weekdays. No other financial compensation can be provided.
