Deputy Director of Clinical and Training Unit-ICAP at Columbia University
Under the direct supervision and guidance of the ICAP Clinical & Training Unit Director, the Deputy Director, Clinical & Training Unit will assist the Director in supporting the clinical aspects of ICAP’s activities in HIV prevention and adult care and treatment across approximately fifteen (15) countries.
This position is grant funded.

Major Accountabilities
- Provide leadership to the Clinical & Training Unit on HIV prevention issues, as well as adult care and treatment. This includes design of programs in partnership with in-country teams as well as provision of clinical mentorship, didactic teaching and guidance to ICAP in-country staff in order to enhance technical capacity at the national, regional and local levels for the delivery of high quality HIV prevention and adult care and treatment services.
- Guide the development and/or refinement of materials, including technical updates, clinical guidelines, protocols, algorithms, dosing guides and other clinical support tools, with a focus on HIV prevention and adult care and treatment.
- Contribute to and/or lead the development, execution and continual updating of the strategic plan for the Clinical & Training Unit.
- Oversee Clinical & Training Units day to day management of administrative matters, including strong participation in the recruitment and hiring of NY-based and key in-country staff.
- Supervise and oversee technical direction and prioritization of activities of select Clinical & Training Unit staff.
- Work with ICAP country teams and ICAP’s Strategic Information Unit to design methods for collection of relevant data as well as interpretation of data and support local use of data to enhance the delivery of high quality, evidence-based HIV prevention and care.
- Conduct visits to country programs and supported sites to provide supervision and technical assistance.
- Oversee and/or actively participate in the preparation of grant proposals and renewals relevant to ICAP; provide technical expertise for other grant writing activities withinICAP.
- Oversee and/or actively participate in the design, implementation and dissemination of research studies and public health evaluations.
- Represent ICAP and the Clinical & Training Unit at meetings, scientific conferences and other venues as needed.
- Oversee Clinical & Training Unit when Director is traveling.
- Perform other related duties as directed.
Education
- MD, PhD, EdD, or professional equivalent
Experience, Skills & Minimum Required Qualifications
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in HIV prevention and adult HIV care and treatment.
- Demonstrated experience in training and mentorship.
- Prior clinical research or program evaluation experience.
- Strong supervisory and management skills for leading teams of clinicians and other public health professionals.
- Ability to work independently with strong problem-solving skills and ability to foresee problems and initiate appropriate action.
- Excellent written and communication skills.
Experience, Skills & Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in HIV prevention and/or HIV care and treatment program implementation in developing countries.
- French, Portuguese and/or African language skills desirable but not required.
Travel Requirements
- Requires international travel of at least four (4) trips per year with each trip lasting approximately ten (10) days.
Academic Appointment
- Academic appointment at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health available, commensurate with appointee’s qualifications.
