Advanced Journalism Writing Trainer

Across the globe, journalists and media pioneers have taken it on themselves to supply their communities with objective information. Free Press Unlimited actively supports these professionals in over forty countries, by offering them, among other things, trainings and temporary financial and material aid, and by strengthening their professional capacity. So that as many people as possible gain and keep access to truly vital information.

Free Press Unlimited is currently seeking to hire (as soon as possible): An Advanced Writing Trainer. Up to 60 journalists, from Middle-Eastern media outlets, will be trained in journalism and production skills, fundamentals and ethics of journalism including reporting on human rights and gender sensitive issues. From a total of 16 workshop, four of them will be on advanced journalism - 10 days for each workshop, 10 trainees per workshop. It is expected that the trainer together with a senior coach/trainer will design each course where FPU will also contribute with methodology and tools. The cooperation is aimed to keep synergy and continuity in the learning programme as well as result oriented. The workshops will be on basic (or intermediate) level, however the needs assessment results will be the guideline to tailor made the course design and to define its level.

Job responsibilities:
  • To train a group of Journalists in the Middle East on the necessary print and non-print advanced writing skills: investigative journalism, persuasion theory, story-telling theory, advanced writing skills (online and printed); approach and angles of stories; "does the title pays off the story?"; is the language used clear, neutral; are the key questions sufficiently answered?;
  • To design layout for training;
  • To contribute with theory and reference work to support the methodology of the training
  • To produce/adjust if necessary learning tools
  • To have good To have good assessment tools that can be used to evaluate the training and the trainees' performances;
  • To report on the results of the training and give recommendations to the trainees and to Free Press Unlimited.

We're looking for an energetic and driven individual with:
  • Proven educational background and/or work experience as a trainer in a similar or the designated field;
  • Experience with print and non-print journalistic writing, investigative journalism, persuasion theory, story-telling theory, and advanced writing skills;
  • Knowledgeable on the Middle East;
  • Fluency in Arabic and English, written and spoken;
  • Good research and analytic skills; knowledgeable about research in journalism and ethical issues within the field;
  • Ability to monitor, evaluate, and recognise weaknesses and strengths of the trainees.
  • Good communication and inter-cultural skills; able to effectively communicate with trainees, other trainers and supervisors;
  • Pedagogical/teaching skills;
  • Available for at least 40 full time days, in a period of one year.
