Winemaking Intern, Acacia Vineyard

ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION:
Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines owns several wineries within California from San Luis Obispo, California on the Central Coast to California’s Northern Napa County. Our primary focus is to produce quality wines by selecting top vineyards and fruit from various sub-appellations. Each winery showcases a unique personality and contributes to Diageo’s passion for being the best and the industry leader.
 
GOALS:
The basic purpose of the internship is to provide a learning experience in the field of winemaking (by teaching our winemaking practices using theoretical and hands-on experience). The overall goal would be to have a symbiotic relationship where we can provide the intern with new winemaking tools and philosophies, while at the same time benefitting by learning from the intern about new techniques, research, and ideas.
 
CORE DUTIES:
 
1.    Monitoring fermentations by checking brix and temperature, as well as visual and sensory evaluations
a.    Interpret data
b.   Prepare and deliver report to winemaking, highlighting key findings
2.    Design and execute experiments to meet winemaking research and production goals
a.    Present finding to larger winemaking group; with tasting if appropriate
3.    Yeast inoculations, nutrient additions, and other grape must additions
4.    Laboratory work including - extracting samples / processing samples / data entry / data interpretation
5.    MLF inoculations, management, and tracking
6.    Monitor effectiveness of sanitation – ATP meter, visual, and SOP audits
7.    Assisting in operating winery equipment (grape processing, presses, pumps,etc.)
8.    Assisting in barrel work  including management of barrel quality control program.
9.    Compliance with all safety policies
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
1.    Degree in or currently enrolled in Enology, Viticulture, or related scientific field; or Winemaking Certificate program. Demonstrated commitment to the wine industry.
2.    Previous winery experience is desired, but not required.
3.    Ability to work as a dynamic and contributing team member in a fast-paced environment.
4.    Excellent communication skills; can communicate effectively in English.
5.    Strong organizational and problem-solving skill; ability to manage priorities and workflow.
6.    Must be computer literate, with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
7.    Must have a good driving record, dependable transportation, and be of legal drinking age.
8.    Must work over-time as required.
9.    Ability to build great relationships with team members
10.   Ability to lift 40 pounds.
