We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate for the position of Communications Officer to support the Global Wheat Program (GWP). The selected candidate will be a member of the International Communications Department and report to the Director of International Communications but will work directly with the GWP Director and members of the GWP staff to prepare, review and edit scientific papers for publication in refereed journals and project proposals, help formulate project documents that meet reporting requirements of donors and promote the GWP and its various projects.
CIMMYT® ( www.cimmyt.org ) is a not-for-profit agricultural research for development organization with partners in over 100 countries. The Center works to sustainably increase the productivity of maize and wheat systems and thus ensure global food security and reduce poverty. CIMMYT's outputs and services include improved maize and wheat varieties and cropping systems, the conservation of maize and wheat genetic resources and capacity building.
The position is based at CIMMYT's campus in Texcoco, Mexico, located 45 km northeast of Mexico City, Mexico. The job involves some travel both in Mexico and in collaborating countries.
Specific duties:
Contribute to and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to advance the GWP's research-for-development programs.
Help shape the GWP's public messages and branding through effective communications strategies and tactics.
Generate compelling information to support CIMMYT's mission.
Develop and implement media strategies for the GWP and its projects.
Raise awareness of the value and impact of major GWP projects through appropriate products and media.
Write, edit and oversee the production of GWP publications including newsletters, science and policy planning reports.
Write GWP-related material for the CIMMYT website and/or subsidiary websites.
Work with the multi-media communications specialists and audio-visual design teams to document GWP activities.
Work with GWP scientists to develop project proposals, including drafting, shaping messages and ensuring proper budgeting.
Provide necessary support for editing of project technical reports.
Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required academic qualifications, skills and attitudes
  • Masters' Degree in journalism, communications, public relations, science, international development or other relevant fields. A bachelor's degree with extensive experience will be considered.
  • At least 5 years of experience in science communications, marketing, public relations, media campaigns and/or non-profit communications.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the non-profit and/or agricultural research for development environments.
  • Clear grasp of communications strategies and creativity in applying them to raise awareness of CIMMYT's activities and achievements.
  • High-level of proficiency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of Spanish or South Asian languages is an advantage.
  • Ability to express technical concepts in clear, simple language for diverse audiences, including the general public.
  • Proficiency in use of social networking and new media tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively in diverse, multicultural partnerships.
We will offer an initial contract for three years, which is renewable subject to continued need, funding and performance of the staff member.
