International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs.
Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through
health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide. By offering training and health care to local populations and medical assistance to people at highest risk, and with the flexibility to respond rapidly to emergency situations, International Medical Corps rehabilitates devastated health care systems and helps bring them back to self-reliance.
PROGRAM BACKGROUND
On November 8th, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) passed through the Visayas Region of the Philippines with wind speeds equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane. The strongest storm of 2013, Typhoon Haiyan devastated parts of the provinces of Leyte, Eastern Samar, Capiz, and Cebu, damaging infrastructure, disrupting livelihoods, halting agricultural production, affecting 14 million people, and killing over 6,200. International Medical Corps was on the ground in the Philippines within 24 hours of Typhoon Haiyan, and began supporting a comprehensive emergency response.
JOB SUMMARY
The Volunteer supports the Country Director, Site Managers and Program Managers in developing project proposals, writing and editing program reports, developing content for external communications, and providing general support in program implementation. The Volunteer is based in Leyte Province, and travels regularly between field sites. This is a 2-3-month posting.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Program Support
    • Contribute to program monitoring, evaluation and reporting for all active projects;
    • Support national program staff to ensure successful implementation and reporting of programs, grants and contracts;
    • Assist monitoring of the progress of each project and assist with the identification of issues which may affect the quality of program performance and consequent program adjustments;
    • Assist with the response to donor inquiries regarding program activities;
    • Assist with the production of various informational grant program-related documents upon request by senior management;
    • Support new project proposals for institutional and private donors;
    • Support identifying program funding opportunities and securing donor meetings for Country Director;
    • Assist field programs when needed;
    • Maintain flexibility to take on added responsibility as and when needed.
  2. Representation
    • Assist in the preparation for coordination meetings on behalf of the organization;
    • Attend cluster meetings or other relevant meetings to represent IMC and collect relevant information
    • Provide support during donor visits to the field;
    • Support the creation of a positive image and overall credibility of the organization, notably through the application of the organizations Code of Conduct, ethics, values and stand-point with regard to internal and external actors
  3. Human Resources Management
    • Provide support in mentoring national staff to ensure their smooth and effective operations;
    • Support open lines of communications with all field staff;
  4. Working Relationships
    • Supports frequent communication with Program Manager to ensure program activities and objectives are communicated;
    • Work closely with the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer and Communications Officer to develop, write, edit and finalize content;
  5. Security
    • Ensures application and compliance of security protocols and policies
  6. Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse
    • Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within International Medical Corps and amongst beneficiaries served by International Medical Corps.
  7. Qualifications:• Undergraduate degree in Public Health, International Development and/or in a relevant field of study
    • Two to three years experience in program design and evaluation, of which at least one year in developing countries or resource deprived environment
    • Familiarity with international humanitarian operations, coordination structures, and the mandates of donors, UN agencies, and other NGOs
    • Cross-cultural awareness and insight into health care issues
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions with limited supervision
    • Extremely flexible, and have the ability to cope with stressful situations and frustrations
    • Ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively
    • Creative and able to work with limited resources
    • Team player and strong communication skills, both oral and written
    • Proficient in computer applications, especially with MS Word and MS Excel, MS PowerPoint a plus
