Social & Economic Justice Program Director
THE ORGANIZATION
Heartland Alliance International (HAI) is a service-based human rights organization committed to protecting and promoting the rights of extremely vulnerable populations through an inclusive approach to comprehensive health and social and economic justice.
One hundred percent of HAI programs apply a progressive and inclusive approach to protecting and promoting the rights of extremely vulnerable populations that are frequently excluded or forgotten by more traditional development programming. HAI is an industry leader in several specialized program areas such as children who have been trafficked, engaged in armed combat, have suffered or are at-risk of suffering violence of some form, and those that have been orphaned/separated from their families; women survivors of discrimination, violence, and trafficking; institutionalized individuals; sexual minorities including LGBT individuals; female sex workers; people living with HIV/AIDS; survivors of trauma and torture; mentally ill individuals; displaced individuals; and indigenous and other ethnic and cultural minorities that have suffered violence and/or discrimination.

THE POSITION
Become a member of Heartland Alliance International’s Leadership Team to help shape and grow an organization that serves the most marginalized and vulnerable communities with bold and innovative programs.
About YOU: A driven and passionate professional hoping to manage an inspiring, dynamic team of leading human rights workers across the Middle East, Central & East Africa, and the Caribbean. Collaborative, hard-working, and visionary, the candidate will have exceptional leadership skills and the ability to grow the diverse social and economic justice program portfolio and take HAI’s successful programming to the next level. This person has experience living and working internationally and is eager to travel often to challenging working environments to lead an inspirational global team. The ideal candidate has strong-English writing skills, speaks fluent French, loves program development, can inspire diverse teams in resource-poor settings, and has at least five years of management experience in complex and challenging environments.
Summary: This position is based in Chicago, IL and provides management, supervision, and program development support to country offices in Haiti, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Lebanon, Iraq, and others as programs grow. The position requires international travel (25% +). This position will support successful growth and implementation of Heartland Alliance International’s social and economic justice program portfolio, including development in new countries. This diverse portfolio includes programs in HAI’s four key program areas: Health, Safety, Justice and Jobs.
Some of the current projects the Social and Economic Justice Program Director would oversee include:
· Anti-trafficking programs for which HAI has developed a dual model of service delivery and policy advocacy;
· Holistic protection services and vocational training to survivors of gender-based violence;
· Mental health and torture treatment programs including legal services targeting survivors of torture, trauma, suicide, and gender-based violence; and
· Women’s leadership and LGBT rights programming focusing on community mobilization, sexual harassment, and livelihoods adapted to different country contexts.
REQUIREMENTS
We are looking for an outstanding professional who has a demonstrated passion for human rights work and is eager to fill a senior leadership position that has the opportunity to oversee and shape lifesaving human rights programming; support and strengthen country directors; and secure the sustainability of HAI’s resources for years to come. Candidates who meet the below criteria are strongly encouraged to apply.
· A Master’s Degree (or equivalent education and years of experience) in international relations, social work, public health, development studies, political science or a related field;
· 5-10 years of work experience in international development/humanitarian relief/international human rights work, preferably in an international non-government organization, experience must include:
· Experience undertaking program design, field assessments, evaluations, and developing M&E systems;
· Demonstrated experience managing large scale multi-million dollar grants and/or contracts from the US government;
· Demonstrated success in identifying funding opportunities and preparing successful proposals to international donors;
· Extensive experience training staff in project management, M&E, and related topics;
· Experience developing, reviewing and tracking budgets and burn rates;
· Experience with USAID and/or State Department funding;
· Experience working with and living with diverse cultures in challenging or insecure environments;
· Demonstrated commitment to advancing human rights;
· Superb written and spoken English, and fluently spoken French;
· Swahili, Arabic, Kurdish, or Haitian Creole skills a plus; and
· Previous technical experience with one or more of the following program areas strongly preferred: anti-trafficking, mental health, protections, income generation, gender and/or vulnerable populations.

Language Skills: English fluency (spoken and written) required; additional language ability preferred. Superb oral and written communications skills, including presenting programs at conferences and to donors;
Computer Skills:Highly proficient with Microsoft Office programs;
Other Requirements: • Must be able to work full-time (M-F, 8:30-5:00) as well as extended hours when needed (nights, weekends); • Must be able and willing to travel internationally – often to insecure and resource-limited settings – for up to four weeks at a time; • Must be able to travel independently to carry out field assessments, to identify potential project partner organizations, to determine beneficiary need and to develop program proposals and budgets for funding;
