****About us****
****ODI**** aims to inspire and inform policy and practice to reduce poverty. We do this by locking together high-quality applied research, practical policy advice and policy-focused dissemination and debate.
This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow to work with ODI’s Social Development Programme. Knowledge, expertise and skills in social development, including theory and methods, required. Additional expertise in evaluation, quantitative methods and in sector or cross cutting issues invited.
You will take leadership on key projects within our portfolio, undertaking innovative research and analysis, and influencing the international debate through public affairs activities including publications, media engagement, speaking at conferences, and providing advice to governments and business at a senior level. The postholder will also have the opportunity to develop their own research interests within the team’s broad areas of focus, including designing research projects, obtaining funding and managing resources for delivery.
Recent programme highlights include:
  • An extensive programme of research and policy engagement on gender justice, child protection, social exclusion, social norms, inequality, and the eradication of poverty
  • New work on improving the development outcomes for girls and young women as part of the Transforming the Lives of Adolescent Girls project
  • Pioneering innovative participatory and qualitative research methods in the Transforming Cash Transfersproject
  • Policy-focused child and youth research to provide advice on protecting children and women in economic crises, highlights include Off the Balance Sheet, and strengthening the links between poverty reduction strategies and child protection initiatives
  • High level panel event at the 2014 United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, co-organised with the OECD and DFID.
****About you****
Above all, you have a passionate commitment to social development, backed by in-depth experience and skills. You have:
· a degree and post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline and substantive knowledge of key issues and organisations in international development
  • knowledge, expertise and skills in social development, including theory and methods.. Additional expertise in evaluation, quantitative methods and in sector or cross cutting issues
  • extensive developing-country experience
  • experience in policy-orientated research, demonstrated by a track record of publications and reports
  • demonstrated capacity for policy advisory or public-affairs work, based on an analytical approach, and innovative and creative communications skills
  • proven ability to translate research ideas into fundable projects
  • track record of fundraising for research
  • skills in negotiation, listening, communication of ideas, problem-solving and decision-making
