Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA) is a large, geographically dispersed organisation operating in 5 different continents and competing in world commodity markets for bauxite, alumina and primary aluminium. RTA’s strategy is based on continually improving its cost competitiveness, ensuring the safe and environmentally sound management of its operations and the realisation of the full potential of its people, technology and physical assets.
 
The Lochaber site includes 2 Reduction Pot lines of 80 pots using AP18 technology with a line current of 215kA, Casting Plant, Power Stations (Lochaber & Kinlochleven) and associated Hydro schemes, Lochaber Power Station generates 65MW & Kinlochleven Power Station generates 20MW AC. The Smelter employs 160 people & produces 47, 000t of metal per year, a combination of Sheet ingot & T Bar.
 
As the People & Functions Manager (HR, HSE & Communications) / Organisation Support Manager, you will be responsible for the management, direction and coordination of the HR, HSE and C&ER activities and teams, and you will ensure that objectives are met in a safe, efficient, cost effective and environmentally responsible manner. The role reports to the General Manager of the site.
 
Your role
 
HR – 40%
 
- Advises the GM and management team on organization structure, job design, and personnel forecasting throughout the company. Evaluates plans and changes to plans. Makes recommendations to the management team.
- Advises GM and management team on all aspects of HR legislation, careers, change management, learning and development, compensation and benefits and workforces planning and suggests strategic tactics to address global and local situations driven by both European and British legislative changes and by local factors.
- Liaises with EMEA HR and the management team in order to develop and administer programs, procedures, and guidelines to help align the workforce with the strategic goals of the company.
- With the GM, leads wage negotiations with trade unions recognized on site (Unite) ensuring that the company’s interests are met in adhering to required budgets whilst retaining morale and incentivising the workforce.
- Lead employee relations and ensure consultation, negotiation and information with trade unions and all employees
 
HSEQ – 30%
 
- Act as HSE competent person for the Lochaber works and Hydro scheme and lead navigation of the implementation of the Rio Tinto HSEQ management system.
- Lead a team of HSE professionals and performance manage them in accordance with the Rio Tinto ITMS system. Attend and/or represent the site at UK and/or BU/Corporate level for Health and Safety
- As applicable, Champion specific HSE related projects, corporate roadmaps and initiatives
- Encourage Incident reduction by a proactive, advisory and supportive role to department leaders and managers.
- Attend/Chair HSEQ Committee for the site, including draft, organization and production of minutes and presentations
- Responsibility for the operation of Lochaber Laboratory
 
Communications & External Relations – 30%
 
- Implement the RT communities standards by implementing the site multiyear plan, preparing for 4-year SMA review, responding to stakeholder grievances
- Deliver on internal communication strategy to increase employee engagement and minimize risk associated with employee speculation of potential business risks
- Establishes a strategy for community relations including the level and direction of financial support for charitable / voluntary / community-led initiatives and ensures Rio Tinto Alcan receives appropriate recognition by implementing a supporting media relations campaign.
- Engage with external stakeholders to develop partnerships that meet local priorities and site objectives, monitor and evaluate impact of community investments through tracking of social performance indicators
- Implement an ongoing media relations campaign which targets key local, national and trade press titles with relevant and topical corporate messages and ‘good news stories’.
- The C&ER is a senior and core member of the site Crisis Management team and as such is required to be fully trained in the appropriate corporate procedures and in the event of an emergency situation, to carry out the relevant duties accordingly.
 
Your profile
 
- University degree in HR, Health and Safety, Engineering or equivalent. An MBA is is a plus.
- Significant HR and HSEQ experience, gained on a manufacturing site, in an international environment.
- Experience of implementing best practice in a complex organisation.
- On-site experience, including governance and local and European legislation. The role has a direct impact on the whole Lochaber site, ensuring HSE standards and industrial relations are maintained and improved.
- Proven experience in working at all level within the organisation.
- Strong leadership skills, including leading by example and global approach to problem solving.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
