Reports to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Location:Action Against Hunger – USA, New York office
Action Against Hunger is part of the ACF International network which provides humanitarian relief in over 40 countries worldwide in the sectors of nutrition, health, water/sanitation, & food security. ACF-USA, an independent NGO, currently manages operations in 7 countries: Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, South Sudan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Cambodia & Uganda. ACF-USA, has over $45 million in programs, approximately 50 permanent staff based in NYC, 100 expatriate employees in the missions, & over 1,200 local staff. Additional growth is anticipated.
Summary of position
The Director of Operations (DO) is a substantial role responsible for providing leadership, direction, strategy, vision & operational integrity to ACF-USA programs & projects. A member of the Senior Management Team (SMT), the DO works closely with the CEO & other members of the SMT to ensure all departments work collaboratively in the best interests of the whole organization & to shape the strategic direction of ACF-USA, nationally & internationally.
The DO oversees all key operations staff (Heads of Program, Technical Director, Security Officer, & Senior Logistic Officer) contributing to the goal of ensuring ACF’s programs are implemented at the highest possible quality, in accordance with ACF mission & values. The DO has primary responsibility for successfully developing & implementing programs in the field, & inspiring operations teams to deliver well designed, properly executed work to help the largest number of beneficiaries possible.
The DO is responsible for guaranteeing that safety and security at field level are managed appropriately.
S/he also serves as a key spokesperson for the agency & is a major player in helping to lead debate & growth within the ACF international network.

Essential requirements
  • Masters’ degree in a relevant field or related, equivalent experience
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience at a senior level in an international aid capacity, or similar role.
  • Extensive experience managing both technical & operational support teams. Ability to coach & lead multi-cultural teams & to supervise direct reports remotely.
  • Capacity to negotiate complex operational strategies and programming with partners (institutional donors, NGOs and corporations), as well as internal network counterparts.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of international humanitarian affairs, including a solid understanding of technical matters relevant to ACF-USA’s work
  • Capacity to represent ACF within the ACF network & externally to other humanitarian actors, funding agencies & private donors.
  • Substantial experience managing challenging security situations in humanitarian emergencies
  • Willingness & ability to travel to visit programs, donors and staff, both nationally & internationally.
  • Strong organizational abilities, excellent written & verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work both independently & as a member of a team
  • Knowledge of & genuine commitment to Action Against Hunger’s humanitarian principles
  • French or Spanish language skills desirable
The starting salary for the Director of Operations position is $125,000 depending on experience. ACF-USA provides all staff with an attractive salary & benefits package.
