Director for Communication and Outreach

Location: Beijing, China
Duration:4 years, with six months’ probation
Report to: Director General
The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) is a leading inter-governmental development organization committed to reducing poverty and protecting the environment through the use of bamboo and rattan. With headquarters in Beijing, China and offices in India, Ethiopia, Ghana and Ecuador, INBAR works with over 39 countries member countries worldwide and has links with partners in over 50 international, regional, and national organizations. 
INBAR is currently seeking an experienced and highly capable Director for Communication and Outreach who is one of the senior staff in INBAR, and a member of the Executive Management Team.  The Director is responsible for the overall outreach and communication with partners and the wider public, including the donor community. The Director oversees a small team, and fundraising to generate additional resources and staff is part of the job.INBAR offers a competitive salary free of taxes in China, and limited international recruitment conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Manage communications and outreach staff in INBAR Headquarters and provide management oversight over communication and  outreachofficers in INBAR Regional Offices where they exist.
  • Develop and implement a global communications strategy for INBAR that supports the 2015-2030 Strategy, including social media (website, facebook, twitter and LinkedIn accounts) and traditional communication means (newsletters, annual reports, marketing and communications materials).
  • Help raise the profile of the organization by publishing stories, arranging interviews, writing briefing notes for INBAR participation at key meetings, and managing a programme of relevant global and Chinese events where INBAR should engage.
  • Oversee the management of the INBAR website and ensure interesting and scientifically robust content.
  • Oversee an INBAR partnership unit responsible for the relations with international organisations and global NGOs
  • Relations management of INBAR donors, sponsors and financial supporters, including a tracking system of project concepts and funding proposals
  • Supervise a European Liaison Office which is mainly focused on fundraising (not yet established)
  • Oversee editing and English language control of major communications products from INBAR Headquarters, including proposals for funding, reports and newsletters.
  • Supervise INBAR inputs to the editorial board of the International Journal for Bamboo and Rattan
  • Event management for INBAR Headquarters
  • Liaison with local and international media contacts in Beijing and abroad, including TV, radio and written press
  • And other tasks delegated by the Director-General
Requirements
  • Advanced degree in communications, journalism, or marketing
  • At least 10 years working experience, preferably international.  China experience an advantage
  • Knowledge of international sustainable development issues
  • English native speaker with excellent English writing and editing skills.Chinese, French or Spanish language proficiency a great advantage.
  • Experience developing communications and marketing tools.
  • Experience with website management and social media
  • A good global network of media, communications and public relations contacts
  • Experience with resource mobilization and prepared to help raise funds for the organization
  • Comfortable in a multi-cultural work environment
  • A team player
  • Someone who is excited about the potential of bamboo and rattan in sustainable development
